There’s so much to see in Nice from the glittering Bay of Angels to the atmospheric Old Town that you may never want to leave. But with such spectacular countryside on the doorstep, a leisurely road trip becomes unmissable. Here are three leisurely routes that explore this beautiful region.
The Route du Mimosa
The spectacular Route du Mimosa is a must see. The 130km route runs from the lovely village of Bormes les Mimosa in the Var to Grasse in the Alpes-Maritimes. You can pick up the most scenic part of the route in Saint Raphael and follow the coastal road to beautiful Mandelieu la Napoule where mimosa festivals are held in winter and early spring. The views over the vibrant yellow of the mimosa and the azure blue of the sea are absolutely breathtaking and both St Raphael and Mandelieu la Napoule are well worth a return visit at any time of year.
Conquering the corniches
When you’re visiting Nice and the Cote d’Azur, the corniche roads are what the French call incontournables. A real test of driving skill and nerve matched with extraordinary vistas and scenery, the switchbacks of the three Corniche roads run more or less parallel to one another. The Grande Corniche is the highest and most spectacular, built by Napoleon following the route of the Roman Via Iulia Augusta and forever associated with Grace Kelly and Monaco. The Moyenne corniche dates from the 1920s and is arguably even more breathtaking with spectacular vistas over some of the most exclusive property in the world. The Basse Corniche is the busiest of the three, hugging the coastline and swooping out over the Mediterranean. Once you’ve driven one, you’ll want to try all three.
From French Riviera to Italian Riviera
Drive out on the Basse Corniche towards Menton and you may just be on one of the most beautiful roads you’ve ever travelled. Now cross the border to the Italian Riviera and head for the magical Cinque Terre, a string of five ancient seaside towns strung out along the coast. A kind of pastel-hued Eden set amongst some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on earth, explore the winding coastal paths on foot before heading back for dinner in Nice.
